Manchester United made their
second signing of the summer by announcing the arrival of Nick Powell from
Crewe. It has been clear that from a young age Powell has been destined for
greatness. He joined his hometown club Crewe Alexandra at just Age 5 through
their youth system. When Powell eventually made his debut for the club he
became the second youngest player ever to appear for Crewe at 16. Not just at
club level but Powell has represented England at U16,17&18 level showing
his potential with a sublime free kick in the U17 international tournament
against Australia. It’s sparks of class like this that had caused a big demand
for the player before his eventual move to Manchester United.
Sir Alex recognized Powell’s
ability early and sent scouts at various occasions to watch him play, most
noticeably at the 2012 League 2 Play-Off Final in which all eyes were Nick
ahead of his move. Little did he disappoint both the Crewe Fans and the
Manchester United Manager with an incredible volley that players like Rooney
and Ronaldo would be proud of. Just over
a month later, it was confirmed that Powell would join for Manchester United in
a deal worth up to £6M.
Soon enough fans will begin to
question whether he will make the step-up from a talented league 2 player and
will cope with the strain that comes with the premier league. Powell is known
for his goal scoring either playing upfront or in the midfield after scoring 16
goals in all competitions last season which combined with his ability that he
has shown puts him in a good frame to develop into a good player at United.
Ferguson has expressed his desire to maintain Powell as a midfielder and would
like to develop him further in a central role rather than move him upfront. If
Ferguson can complete the transition successfully over the next few seasons
then Powell will surely become a top English midfielder for the future. Powell
will accompany his team-mates on the pre-season tour were Sir Alex and his
staff can assess him closer and work with him so he acquires the style of play
that United use in matches.
