Manchester United started the New Year in solid fashion
cruising past the relegation contenders Wigan Athletic by 4 goals. The game
also saw the record time league champions keep the clean sheet for the second
game in a row. Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez scored two a piece helping
united keep the seven point gap at the top intact. The Latics have dropped to
17th with the defeat and unless Martinez is able to repeat the magic
of last season they will find it difficult to stay up.
Victory or not there is always something to learn from a
game. So what is that United should keep in mind from this game?
1. It’s not right for Young:
He may be a versatile player but
he looked very uncomfortable playing on the right wing today. He made a couple
of good crosses and that’s about all he did the entire game before being taken
off.
2. Giggs is evergreen:
The 39 year old was chosen ahead of Out of
form Valencia and had a storming game. He absolutely dominated the left side of
the pitch and delivering some pin point crosses troubling the Wigan defence.
3. RVP & Hernandez can form a good pair:
Rooney and Kagawa not in the
starting line up? No problem. Sir Alex’s rotation policy is finally bearing
fruits as team works just fine with each rotation. Today the exceptional
performance was given by the pair upfront of Robin Van Persie.
4. The backbone:
Yes RVP has been scoring goals
and changing the game around but the real strength of United’s consistent
performances has been Michael Carrick. The midfielder has started all of 21
games and has been in good form. His pass completion ratio and vision has been
brilliant and his ability to blend in with any partner has brought some much
needed stability to the midfield.
5. Cool head and Clean sheet:
Manchester United managed to keep
their second clean sheet in a row for the first time season and it has been
largely due to some cool and composed defending at the back. The last two games
saw United tracking back and blocking shots with considerable ease and it looks
like the defensive problems of the team may well be finally getting over.
