With an average age of 22, there clearly isn't a lack of youth or prospect. Ashley Young, Phil Jones & David de Gea joined Man Utd for a total sum of around £60m, all costing around £20m each.
Nineteen year old Jones and twenty year old De Gea both shined at the U-21 Fifa World Cup; and De Gea ended up with a winners medal having been influential in front of the sticks. Although England's football team once again failed to impress, Jones and his United team-mate Chris Smalling both built a solid brick wall in defence. Finally, the more familiar face of Ashley Young who has just turned 26; has recently been at the heart of Fabio Capello's plans and will certainly be an asset to the team.
More about them:
Name: David de Gea
Age: 20
Position: GK
Factfile: Rised through the hierarchy at Athletico Madrid and cemented a first team spot in 2009. He since played over 50 La Liga games and is now known as the best young goalkeeper around.
Name: Ashley Young
Age: 26
Position: Winger, AM
Factfile: Not so young any more, if you pardon the pun. However the ex Watford and Aston Villa man is well known for his ability to cross and take on a player.
Name: Phil Jones
Age: 19
Position: Central Defender/DM
Factfile: His versatility will certainly be an asset in the future, he is strong and commanding and is certainly a great talent. Not only can he play in defence; he can also play in the holding midfield role and it will be interesting to see where SAF elects to play him.
In my opinion these three players will definitely all be big, big hits at United. For Jones, maybe first team football will be limited for the first few seasons - however the future is bright. David de Gea has been dubbed the next Van der Sar (known by his Spanish team mates as Van der Gea). Ferguson has said the 1st team spot for him hasn't been cemented as Anders Lindegaard will fight for his life to overtake his counterpart. Finally, Ashley Young will be expected to be a hit for United and let's hope that he lives up to his rather large pricetag.
